8 Breastfeeding-Friendly Bottles for Babies #inAbuDhabi

I struggled with breastfeeding my first born. She didn’t know how to latch on until well after her 4th week mark. Looking back, these 4 weeks seemed like 4 months. It was a serious struggle that somehow I blocked off from my memory. I only like to remember the part where I breastfed her until she turned 23 months. After giving birth to Sharif 9 months ago, these dark repressed memories came back up again. I now remember these weeks vividly.

One thing that I struggled with as a working mom was helping my babies adapt quickly and transition between breast and bottle seamlessly. But, the process is not simple. Unlike exclusively bottlefed babies who’s main struggle is bottle acceptance, breastfed babies also face “nipple confusion” or “bottle preference” and could wean themselves prematurely. Some bottle nipples are just much easier to latch onto than the breast and once your baby discovers that, they might just prefer the bottle. If the baby develops bottle preference, then it might be extremely hard to switch them back to breastfeeding. That is why I always try to delay introducing the bottle (despite my mother-in-law’s well-meaning advice to start my babies as early as possible). So, if you can delay bottle introductions then…I’d say delay it until:

  1. your baby is securely latched, and
  2. your milk supply is established right around the 4-6 week mark.

If you are a working, exclusively pumping, or supplementing mom and looking for bottles that are more breastfeeding-friendly, then here are two simple tips for shopping for a bottle:

  1. Asses the flow rate of the nipple – I’d say look for a slower flow rate to mimic breastfeeding, and
  2. make sure the shape of the nipple mimics yours.

These are the two most important guidelines.

I had my first two kids in the U.S. and I was familiar with what’s available there. When I had my third baby here, I had to re-familiarize myself with the local market.
