Giving Back: #GreenRamadan

Whether you’re observing Ramadan in the traditional sense, or just as a bystander this year, Pro Partner Group has launched a pretty ingenious and unique way of giving back this month with the #GreenRamadan campaign. We spoke with James Swallow, the Commercial Director and sparkplug behind the initiative.

What made you start the Go Green with us this Ramadan campaign?

I had been working on an article about Abu Dhabi winning the prestigious Environmental Award in 2015 and realized there was a lot of potential to support the local community and give back to the environment with a grassroots campaign. At Pro Partner, we have been coming up with some creative ways to go green this month and wanted to see what the greater local community could do. As we spoke to people about it, we realized how popular the idea was and soon teamed up with Traders Hotel by ShangriLa and Amira Rahim, renowned Abu Dhabi-based abstract artist [Editor’s note: WE.LOVE.HER.]. Both offered prizes for the best entries, and the #GreenRamadan campaign was born.

Do you celebrate Ramadan?

Although I do not celebrate Ramadan, I love the idea of having a month of reflection and giving back to the community so I wanted to create something that would do just that.

What can we win?


The first drawing will be at the half way point of Ramadan and the lucky recipient will win a delicious, organic Iftar meal for two at Traders Hotel by Shangri La. The second winner will be chosen over Eid by Amira Rahim and will win a canvas of the Grand Mosque (above), hand embellished in ink.

What can we do to win these great prizes?

Entries can be made on any social media site using the #GreenRamadan and #ProPartnerGroup hashtags: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. They must then either like our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter for their entry to count.

I decided to participate in the Green Ramadan campaign because it is for a great cause. The sprit of Ramadan is all about reflection and charity, and what better way to be charitable than to reduce our carbon footprint for the generations to come? During the month of Ramadan, Muslims are fasting for the majority of their waking hours. As a result, we are naturally consuming less than we normally would throughout the year. I think this campaign is a great reminder for us to be modest not only in our outward appearances but also in our daily actions.

Tweet, post, or Instagram the ways in which YOU are going green and giving back to the environment this Ramadan, making sure to use the #GreenRamadan and #ProPartnerGroup hashtags, and liking the ProPartner Facebook page. It can be as simple as not using your printer, changing to energy saving bulbs, or using a mug instead of a paper/plastic cup for your coffee…but the more creative you are, the greater your chances of catching the judges’ attention!
