Worth the Drive: Disney on Ice Dubai

Last year, when I first heard of the Disney-based theatrical extravaganza that apparently included characters on ice skates, my interest was immediately piqued. Disney on Ice sounded exactly like the kind of activity my daughter would enjoy, and hey, I might find it entertaining enough as well.

If you don’t know me, you might find it surprising that this was a difficult decision to make (and for those who do know me: I know, I complicate things way too much).  You see, I have a love/hate relationship with Disney. On one hand, Disney cartoons remind me of my childhood and bring back happy memories of when my brothers and I used to fold ourselves into small cupboards only to emerge as mythical creatures and fantastic heroes.

On the other, I find that some of the Disney cartoon themes conflict with the values and ideals which I want to instill in my own children. But when you throw my conflicting feelings into a fighting ring, happy childhood memories always win. I watched those cartoons and I turned out OK (no comment, please), so my inner dialogue reassures me that my little ones will be fine.

So, I booked our tickets and planned a mother-daughter day out in Dubai for Disney on Ice.

We arrived in Dubai giddy with excitement and took our seats in anticipation of dragons, princes, and evil sea creatures. We were not disappointed as we watched scenes from Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, Rapunzel and more. My favourite scene from last year’s performance was The Little Mermaid which was magical and made me feel as though I had been transposed into the cartoon. The choreography, singing, props, and costumes were incredible and I was instantly a little girl again.

In total awe at Disney on Ice 2014

At one point, I looked over and managed to catch a picture of my daughter with her mouth wide open. I’m sure if she had a camera, she could have caught a couple of me in the same pose! Disney on Ice was such a successful outing for us that I have already booked our tickets for this year’s event as well.  I can confidently recommend that Disney on Ice is Worth the Drive for Abu Dhabi residents.

Oh, and to up the ante, this year’s performance includes scenes from Frozen, making it that much more appealing to our kids.
